After the hurtful manifestation of the Ministry of Defenselast Friday, the president of the TSE Edson Fachin decided to defuse the situation in a response sent earlier this week.
On the occasion, General Paulo Sérgio Nogueira stated that the Armed forces did not feel properly “prestigious” in the course of preparations for this year’s elections. The military were invited to integrate the transparency commission of the Electoral Court and presented questions for the ‘improvement’ of the electoral process. The TSE, however, rejected the points raised, responding that the proposals were either redundant (in relation to what already exists) or unfeasible.
In the document addressed to the Ministry of Defense, Fachin reinforced the “necessary inter-institutional dialogue in favor of strengthening Brazilian democracy” and added information about the inspection and audit processes of the electronic voting system — targets of fierce and unproven criticism from the ministry.
“I renew our respectful greetings to Your Excellency, also expressing our high regard the Armed Forces and all institutions of the democratic rule of law in Brazil,” said Fachin.
