It is on the upper arms at the Dutch KSV Hoek, where trainers Lorenzo Staelens and Gaby Demanet have been working since the end of last year. A conflict with a sponsor led to a rift on Thursday evening.
KSV Hoek has always been a turbulent club and various Belgian coaches have already paid the price for it. Lorenzo Staelens also had to experience that. Together with his assistant Gaby Demanet he guided Hoek from a relegation place to the top five. The duo soon threw Constancia out. The ex-Ghent player had a bad influence on the group. After his departure, Hoek went crescendo, where Gertjan Martens (ex-Knokke) has also been playing since New Year. Alexander Embrechts (ex-Westhoek) is also part of the core.
Things never calmed down in the boardroom, however. In January, chairman Van der Staal resigned after a conflict with sponsor Andre Wagenaar, who has been a member of the technical committee since the beginning of this year. Wagenaar is known for putting pressure on the drafting or not of some players. “It’s him or me”, Van der Staal had already said in January when he left. On Thursday evening, things escalated in that area with Staelens and Demanet. Despite the excellent results, both had not yet been able to sign a new contract and there was again sporting interference. “Incomprehensible”, many players reacted. “Staelens is the trainer with the greatest successes in ten years at Hoek, but he has to leave now.”
Broker Eric Tetaert negotiated with the club’s management on Friday about the termination of the contracts. Staelens and Demanet were asked not to comment.
