Within the framework of a diplomatic meeting held in kyiv this Thursday, June 16, the leaders Emmanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz, Klaus Yohannis and Mario Draghi confirmed their unanimous support for the incorporation of Ukraine into the European Union. before meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in the presidential palace, the Italian prime minister toured the devastated territory of Irpin. “I felt horror and hope, hope for the reconstruction and for the future,” he said.
In a highly symbolic visit, the main leaders of Europe supported Ukraine’s candidacy to the EU. Nevertheless, Macron proposed the creation of “European Political Community”an “informal” alliance that would allow the immediate inclusion of Ukraine and the United Kingdom, taking into account that “it will take a while” for the invaded country to become an effective member of the European Union.
“I have always been consistent: France has been on Ukraine’s side from day one, and President Zelensky himself has always wanted to talk to President Putin,” the French president said. In a renewed message of peace and unity, Macron referred to France’s “historic mistake” with its German neighbors: “We stand shoulder to shoulder with Chancellor Scholz. A hundred years ago, we were at war. The allies helped France win. France made a historic mistake: it lost the peace because it wanted to humiliate Germany”, he explained.
“Ukraine will decide when conditions are met to build peace and what are these political conditions,” Macron added during the meeting in kyiv.
For his part, the Italian premier, mario draghiwarned that “Italy wants Ukraine in the European Union”. Indeed, “the most important message of our visit is that Italy wants Ukraine in the EU, wants it to have candidate status and will support this position at the next European Council. Zelensky knows that it is a way forward, not just a step,” said Draghi, quoted by the news agency Latin goose.
Despite the fact that the leaders support Ukraine’s immediate candidacy, “there are countries with different positions”, explained the Italian premier, due to the possible reaction of Russia in this regard. The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, had accused the European body of having become, in his opinion, “an aggressive and warmongering actor”.
“We”, Draghi completed, “are here today for this, to help Ukraine rebuild its future. We want peace, but Ukraine must defend itself and Ukraine must choose the peace it wants, the one it considers acceptable to its people. Only then can there be lasting peace.”
We understand that the path to the EU is not a single step, but this path must begin,” Zelensky said. “Here are 4 fundamental EU countries that are on our side. It is a historic result”remarked the President of Ukraine.
