Magnitude 6 earthquake leaves material damage in Ecuador

An earthquake of magnitude 6 shook the Ecuadorian territory on Saturday night, causing panic among the population and material damage to some homes, according to official sources.

The Geophysical Institute (IG) of Ecuador indicated on its official Twitter account that the tremor was recorded at 23:28 local time on Saturday (04:28 GMT on Sunday) at a depth of 10 kilometers and with an epicenter 11.79 kilometers from the city of Esmeraldas, capital of the province of the same name.

The IG has subsequently recorded a series of aftershocks in the same area, one of the most important reached a magnitude of 5.1, at 00:53 local time on Sunday (05:53 GMT), with a depth of 12 kilometers and 12.76 kilometers of Atacames, in the province of Esmeraldas.

The National Risk and Emergency Management Service of Ecuador (SNGRE) reported that the earthquake was felt in the provinces of Manabí, Pichincha, Bolívar, Los Ríos, Guayas, Esmeraldas, Santo Domingo and Cotopaxi.



Likewise, images disseminated on social networks show that the tremor caused considerable damage to several homes in the city of Esmeraldas. So far no casualties have been reported from the ground movement.

Likewise, it was possible to observe the population that took to the streets in panic due to the intense telluric movement.



The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, reported on Twitter that the governor of Esmeraldas, Tania Obando, has already activated the provincial COE (Emergency Operations Center) to assess damage and future risks.

“The inter-institutional teams are in the territory to attend to any need of the population. We are with you,” said the president.
