Chemnitz – Big renovation offensive at the Chemnitz park railway: The old station building from the 1980s is being modernized after a long period of intensive use.
In addition to the replacement of windows, heating and doors, the employees can also look forward to new changing rooms with more storage space. Temporary containers have to be used during the construction work for ticket sales and the signal box.
“There are now supervisors and dispatchers who take care of rail operations in the makeshift signal box,” explains Theo Gerber (25), the station manager’s assistant.
Together with his colleagues, he had to deactivate several main signals and electric switches because there was no space in the containers to operate them.
Chosen! He is the new mayor of Chemnitz
“The dispatcher now operates the points, which are otherwise electrically controlled, manually,” adds Gerber.
But some things had to be changed on the route as well: “We marked several main signals as ‘invalid’ and removed the barrier booms from the two level crossings so that road users are not irritated,” says Gerber.
So that safety is still guaranteed, the engine driver must now take action himself, as Jürgen Keller (51) explains: “I now have to whistle when crossing the level crossings.”
The aging station building is to be renovated by June 2023. For more than one million euros, among other things, a gas heater is installed, a larger changing room is built – separate for men and women – and the snack bar is renewed.

Park railway manager Tim Zolkos (42) adds: “Driving will continue in the meantime.”
