SES-MG (Minas Gerais State Health Department) is investigating a suspected death caused by monkeypox in the state. It is the first case under investigation for the disease in Minas Gerais. The suspected death of the disease was reported last Saturday (16) and according to SES-MG, the person lived in Uberlândia, but worked in Araguari, in the Triângulo Mineiro.

Given the suspicion, a sample was collected from the patient who died and sent for laboratory analysis at Fundação Ezequiel Dias, in Belo Horizonte, for laboratory diagnosis. “All clinical data will also be evaluated by the technical team of the State Department and the Ministry of Health for classification and closure of the case”, said the secretary in a note, released by Exame magazine.

The state secretariat of Minas and the municipal health departments of Araguari and Uberlândia are investigating the case and monitoring the victim’s close contacts. In a note, SES-MG points out that it will not disclose too much data about the case, to preserve the privacy and individuality of the patient.

So far, Brazil has confirmed three cases of monkeypox. Two in São Paulo and the third case was detected in Rio Grande do Sul. There are at least six other cases under investigation. Until last Friday (10) there was also a suspicion that a 16-year-old teenager who is hospitalized at Santa Casa de Corumbá also had the disease, but that possibility was ruled out.
