The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPF) launched a civil inquiry to investigate the homicide of indigenous Vito Fernandes, 42 years old, during a confrontation between the Military Police and indigenous people in Amambai. He also asked the Civil Police to provide information on the progress of investigations into the deaths of Márcio Rosa Moreira and Vitorino Sanches.

The attorney of the republic Marcelo José da Silva details in the ordinance issued last Monday (21). “Determine and follow up on the conflict between indigenous people from the Amambai village and the local police forces, during the supposed repossession of land, which took place nearby, adopting any administrative and/or civil measures that may be necessary”, he says.

In addition to opening the inquiry, the prosecutor still gives the Civil Police 20 days to provide information on the death of two other indigenous people in Amambai, Márcio Rosa Moreira and Vitorino Sanches.

Vito Fernandes was killed during a confrontation with the Military Police of Mato Grosso do Sul, in June of this year. The Guarani-Kaiowá indigenous Márcio Moreira, who died in July, was working on a construction site when he was shot twice.

Indigenous leader Vitorino Sanches, 60, was killed by gunmen in Amambai. This attack was the second that the Guarani-Kaiowá indigenous person suffered in just over a month.

In the ordinance, the agency points out that it intends to monitor the conflict between indigenous peoples and police forces in Amambai, during the supposed repossession of lands. The MPF describes in the document that it intends to obtain information for the initiation of a police investigation aimed at investigating the homicides of Vito, Márcio and Vitorino, as well as injuries suffered by other indigenous people during the conflict. Adopting any administrative or civil measures that may be necessary.
