After a 3-0 practice defeat against European Championship host country England, Belgium, which is 19th in the world ranking, will play its second exhibition game against Northern Ireland (FIFA 47) in Lier on Thursday. “The intention is to gain confidence,” Serneels told Tubize on Wednesday. “It will be a different game, with more possession from us. I want to see good decisions in possession, nice moves and a team that shows that they want to play every game from the first minute.”

Serneels also hopes that his team “takes control of the game from the first minutes, creates opportunities but also remains alert when the ball is lost, is immediately in the right organization and does not give Northern Ireland too many opportunities.”

The national coach said he expects to be able to give playing time to Kassandra Missipo, Elena Dhont and Ella Van Kerkhoven, who were sidelined for a long time injured. Only Jody Vangheluwe is not available for Thursday.

Serneels unveiled his 23-man squad for the European Championship on Monday, which heralded a new phase in the preparation. “The first two to three weeks we worked on volume, now we are increasing the intensity,” clarified Serneels, who believes his team is on track for the European Championship. “Where we are now is perfect. And we know what we want to do in the next two weeks.”

Before the departure to England, the Red Flames will face Austria (June 26) and Luxembourg (June 28) friendly.
