Ladenburg – Some pets are so dear to their owners that they want to be close to their faithful companion even after death. And that’s now available in the Ländle!

For the first time in Baden-Württemberg, the municipality of Ladenburg is offering the option of burial in a shared grave. The town in the Rhein-Neckar district has created its own area in its cemetery for urn graves for humans and animals as well as for human coffins and animal urns.

Facilities where people and animals find their last resting place together are viewed critically in some places – or are banned, as in Hesse.

In southern Germany, only Braubach near Koblenz in Rhineland-Palatinate and, since last summer, Ladenburg, offer such a selection.

According to the consumer initiative Bestattungskultur Aeternitas, there are white spots in Saarland and Bavaria as well as in all of northern Germany. There are a few of these special cemeteries in East Germany. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the controversial form of burial has established itself in six places, explains Aeternitas Managing Director Christoph Keldenich.

No animal lover has yet used the innovation in Ladenburg. In theory, all animals can be buried there – from small animals such as hamsters to cats and horses.

The reluctance may also be due to the prices: If you want to reserve a place for yourself and your animal, you have to pay 4637 euros for the urn burial or 6500 euros for the coffin burial. In addition, there are 336 euros each for the addition of the animal urn. However, grave maintenance is included in the price.
