boxing, Cuba, Andy Cruz

Madrid Spain.- Cuban boxer Andy Cruz, Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion, recently left Cuba and is already in the Dominican Republic.

The news was confirmed by social networks by the expert in this sport, Willie Suárez.

“We can already confirm it: Andy Cruz on his way to professional boxing,” Suárez said through Boxeo Cubano’s Facebook page.

“Andy left Cuba just as all of us who were born in it left it and one day we said goodbye to him, sadly. He did not betray anyone or abandon anything. Being young, Andy finally dreams of living in freedom and with the opportunity to fight for a better future where there are options without them being imposed,” said the Cuban Boxing director.

“Andy is doing what any person with half a brain would do, which is to take advantage of his youth and fight for a better future so as not to end up in total poverty like the legends of Cuban amateur and professional boxing have ended up, who never learned that youth in you have to take advantage of this sport”, he added.

The 26-year-old boxer from Matanzas did not show up for the last training sessions for the Playa Girón Tournament that begins on Monday on the island and did not travel to the competition venue, the official media reported this Sunday. HIT.

In other publication Willie Suárez commented: “They assure me that Andy Cruz’s absence from the tournament was a total surprise. I cannot mention names so as not to associate the sources with anything, but some of the highest leaders of the National Federation and Cuban boxing were heard shouting in frustration.”

Last May Andy Cruz was excluded from the team that traveled to Aguas Calientes, Mexico, where the Cubans debuted in professional boxing.

According to the island’s sports authorities, the decision was due to “last-minute adjustments.”

Last March boxers Kevin Brown (67 kg) and Herich Ruiz (86 kg) left the national delegation during the Continental Championship held in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Herich Ruiz, bronze in the 2021 Boxing World Cup, left the tournament shortly after the weigh-in for his fight against the American Arjan Iseni, with whom he would seek a place in the final.

For his part, Kevin Brown did not arrive at the competition, but took advantage of a stopover at the Tocumen airport, Panama, to separate from the team.
