On the Sint-Jansplein in Kontich, baskets will be played one more time on 14 and 15 May, just like in the past. Basketball club Kontich Wolves is celebrating its 70th anniversary with this. But it will also be a festive farewell to De Ploeg, the iconic clubhouse located on the square.

Kontich Wolves has been playing its matches in the sports hall of Sint-Rita for years, but for once the club returns to its roots on Sint-Jansplein.

“Outdoor matches used to be commonplace,” says chairman Chris Daenen. “I estimate that until about fifteen years ago we still played matches on Sint-Jansplein. But since then, the evolution has gone very fast. There are very few teams that play outside. Basketball has actually become a pure indoor sport. Although with the popularity of the 3×3 basket, the square basket seems to be in the process of revival.”

It is such competitions that the club also organizes on Sint-Jansplein on Saturday and Sunday. “We have to paint some lines again, because the square is now serving as a parking lot,” laughs the chairman. “In addition to the 3×3 games, we also invited a number of old basketball glories to show their skills again. There is a record attempt and with Bushcraft on Saturday and The Great Pretenders on Sunday we also provide live music.”

The Squad

With the two-day event, Kontich Wolves gives the classic season finale extra cachet on the occasion of its seventieth anniversary in November. “But above all, to be able to say goodbye to De Ploeg in a beautiful way”, announces chairman Daenen. “As it were, everyone who has held a basketball in Kontich knows this local. It was not only our permanent place to fraternize, the room also served as a meeting and storage space.”

When the building had to be declared inaccessible with immediate effect at the end of 2020 due to its poor condition, it was a heavy blow for the club. “Fortunately, we were able to make good agreements with the municipality. Sponsor Insurea also welcomed us with a meeting and storage space. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, we were unable to say goodbye in a beautiful way.”
