Oscar-winning director arrested on suspicion of rape, victim hospitalized

The 69-year-old director arrived in Italy for a film festival starting in Tuesday in Ostuni, in the southern province of Puglia. The Italian news agency LaPresse and other press outlets have also brought down a statement from the Brindisi prosecutor’s office that an investigation has been launched into the report of a young woman who claims to have been raped.

Prosecutors Antonio Negro and Livia Orlando say the woman needed medical help after the incident. It is known that after several days of forced sexual intercourse, the woman was accompanied by a man to Sunday at Brindisi Airport, where he was “left alone despite his physical and mental shocks”.

The Brindisi prosecution was closed on Sunday and Haggis’ lawyer has not yet responded to the revelations.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the airport staff and police noticed the woman’s apparently disturbed condition, so she was “taken to the Brindisi police headquarters after first aid and then taken to a local hospital for examination”. They added that the woman had “made an official complaint referring to the circumstances which were being investigated by investigators”.

Police said he was not authorized to investigate the case or whether Haggis was being held at the police station, in his hotel room or at another location. For the time being, she does not know the woman’s age or citizenship, only that she is a foreigner.
