OVERVIEW LIGUE 1. Belgian on his way to European football, Lamkel Zé scores important goal in relegation battle

We may see Matz Sels back in Europe next year. Strasbourg, where Sels was again between the goal posts, won 1-0 against Clermont Foot after a goal by Adrien Thomasson. Strasbourg thus actually ends up in fifth place: it entitles you to a place in the last preliminary round of the Conference League.

Strasbourg can even jump over Rennes to fourth place and Europa League football on the final day of play, because the difference is only two points. On the other hand, in the event of a loss of points, Strasbourg can still grab next to European football, because Nice (the same number of points, but with a lower goal difference) and Lens (two points less) are lurking.

Rennes and Doku still dream of Champions League

Marseille lost a serious stab in the battle for a direct ticket to the group stage of the Champions League during a visit to Stade Rennes. After all, Stade Rennes won 2-0. Marseille sees Monaco as a result, but drops to third place based on the goal difference.

Rennes in turn comes in fourth place with three points less than both clubs. Jérémy Doku’s club also has a much better goal difference than Monaco and Marseille and can therefore qualify for the group stage (if both clubs lose and Rennes wins) or the preliminary round (if one of the two clubs loses and Rennes wins if they win on the final match day). Rennes wins) of the Champions League.

Lamkel Zé puts Metz on provisional jump-off spot

Didier Lamkel Zé, who currently works for FC Metz, scored a very important goal in the relegation battle. Thanks to the Cameroonian, Metz won 1-0 against SCO Angers and has therefore jumped to eighteenth place for the time being, with as many points as Saint-Etienne. However, with a better goal difference (-29 against -35), Metz is eighteenth. And that is very important: after all, eighteenth place offers a place in the jump-offs, while nineteenth is directly relegated to Ligue 2.

Saint-Etienne lost at home to Reims, where Wout Faes and Thomas Foket were on the defensive for the entire match. It became 1-2. Maxime Busi came in at the break. Reims could thank goal scorers Munetsi and Doumbia in Saint-Etienne. In between, Mangala scored for Saint-Etienne.

On Saturday, it was also announced who, besides Toulouse, will be the second direct PhD candidate from Ligue 2. That is AC Ajaccio, who won against Toulouse (1-0) on the final day of play and thus secured second place. Auxerre, Paris FC and FC Sochaux go to the jump-offs.

Bordeaux not yet definitively relegated

Metz and Saint-Etienne can no longer save themselves directly, because number seventeen Lorient drew against Bordeaux and is therefore four points clear of both Metz and Saint-Etienne. The same Bordeaux also retains a mathematical chance at the jump-offs due to the draw, although that chance is only mathematical: Bordeaux must win at Brest next week, hope that Metz and Saint-Etienne both lose, and then also have to make a huge difference in Eliminate goal difference against Metz (-29 against -41). That is hoping for a miracle for the Girondins.

Messi scores two goals in Ligue 1 for the first time

PSG has of course been certain of the league title for a while, but on the 37th match day Lionel Messi unleashed his devils once again. After twenty minutes, the Argentine superstar had already scored twice on a visit to Montpellier. A first for Messi in France, it was only his fifth and sixth league goals for PSG this year, and the first time he has scored two goals in one match in Ligue 1.

The French champion further increased the score afterwards. Angel Di Maria scored the 0-3 before half an hour and in the second half Kylian Mbappé made the 0-4 from the spot. Mbappe had also provided the assists for Messi’s goals.
