Dramatics. Because of the rain, because of the blows suffered by some players, and because of the resolution of the second finalist. The second match this Sunday at the Palermo Polo Open was lackluster, choppy, with few goals. But at the same time it had an outcome of those that keep the viewer on the edge of the seat, as usually happens between the two rivals who starred in it. And there was the surprise with which the team with the lowest handicap threatens so much (33 goals against 38): Cría La Dolfina beat Ellerstina 9-8 and struck a blow in zone B of the Argentine Open Championship.

La Dolfina’s B formation, which twice (2017 and 2020) had been on the verge of beating the Pieres team in Palermo, managed to make sure that this time it was not a false alarm and prevailed over a team that always complicates them. He had beaten him in Hurlingham 2021 (10-9, the day Nicolás Pieres fell worryingly) and complicated in Tortugas 2022 (a draw at the start of the last chukker, although a final defeat by two goals in a semifinal), and now he put it so much in a crisis of confidence as in a real problem of results: Z must win by at least three goals the last game of the group, the classic with La Dolfina, scoring at least seven, to be a finalist in Palermo. It’s not difficult to get seven goals in eight chukkers; the difficult thing is to beat La Dolfina, which is packed, and by more than one goal.

It’s not difficult to score seven goals in eight chukkas except when you’re on a day like this Sunday in Ellerstina. Weak in tackling, irresolute in the face of the –convenient– drop in pace proposed by Cría La Dolfina, the blue team suffered throughout the game. After the first half, he had scored just three penalties. And of his eight totals, only two were live ball. It is true that they had seven clear unconverted plays against the goal, but La Dolfina will have no sympathy for that next Sunday.

Cría La Dolfina celebrated this great triumph with euphoria. She can still be a finalist for Palermo. He was on the verge in 2020, when Diego Cavanagh missed a goal in the extra chukker and Nico Pieres punished the other side aboard his great Guillermina. This time it was given. It is almost impossible for them to reach the definition of the contest, because they need a victory for Z in the classic by up to 6-5, an almost impossible result. But a thorn was removed in Palermo. And it puts drama where a bit of unpredictability was missing.
