A magnitude 7 earthquake sparked moments of panic in Tuesday Solomon Islands, whose capital Honiara was left without power in some areas. The earthquake also placed a tsunami alert in the coastal areas of the archipelago located less than 300 km from the epicenter, although it was later deactivated, indicated the Pacific Alert Center.

“It was a big one,” Joy Nisha, a receptionist at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara, told AFP. “Some things in the hotel fell. Everything seems fine, but there was a panic, ”she added.

An AFP reporter in the capital of the archipelago indicated that the shaking caused by the earthquake lasted about 20 seconds.

Electricity was cut in some areas of the city. The residents abandoned their offices and escaped to high places.

“I was very scared because it is the first time I have felt this type of earthquake”said the manager of the Pacific Casino Hotel, who asked not to be named.

“The building was shaking very violently,” explained. “He was very strong, he made you move from side to side,” she added.

Dozens of workers and guests of the facility took refuge in an open-air parking lot, hoping to stay away from possible landslides.

After an initial estimate of 7.3, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicated that the earthquake had a magnitude 7 and its epicenter was located 10 kilometers deep on the southwest coast of the island of Guadalcanal.

Although the tsunami warning has passed, the authorities of Solomon Islands They asked the inhabitants for caution, especially in the face of the possibility of aftershocks.

According to United Nations data, some 20,000 people live within a radius of 50 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake.
