Rafael Nadal starts with a smooth victory at ATP Masters Rome, possibly a new duel with Goffin in the quarterfinals

Rafael Nadal (ATP 4) has qualified for the eighth finals of the Masters 1,000 tournament in Rome on Wednesday. The Spanish clay king defeated American John Isner (ATP 27) 6-3 and 6-1 on his favorite surface.

Nadal is the third seed in Rome. He will meet Canadian Denis Shapovalov (ATP 16) in the third round. Then David Goffin (ATP 48) may wait in the quarterfinals. Last week, our compatriot was narrowly beaten by Nadal at the ATP Masters tournament in Madrid.

35-year-old Nadal has already won the Rome tournament ten times and is defending champion there. Last year he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final. He can meet his Serbian rival this time in the semifinals.

Zverev also started flawlessly

Alexander Zverev (ATP 3) also qualified for the eighth finals on Wednesday. The German, who was also free in the first round, defeated Argentine qualifier Sebastian Baez (ATP 37) on the clay in the Italian capital 7-6 (8/6) and 6-3.

Zverev will face Australian Alex de Minaur (ATP 22) or American Tommy Paul (ATP 34) in the third round.

The 25-year-old Zverev already won the title in Rome once, in 2017. A year later, he lost the final to Rafael Nadal. Last Sunday, the German was still a losing finalist at the Masters 1,000 in Madrid, where he fell against the Spanish teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz.
