Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday endorsed Iran’s position on the demand to lift the sanctions imposed by the United States (USA) for the reactivation of the 2015 Nuclear Agreement.

“The Americans seek to make an amended plan the subject of a new agreement, while the Iranians insist that everything must be as it was approved in 2015,” he stressed.

From Cambodia, the Russian diplomat indicated that “Iran’s position is totally legitimate” and that it is the US that must return to what was initially established in the Comprehensive Joint Action Plan (PIAC).

The foreign minister made these statements in the framework of the 55th Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) held in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.

A new round of talks began on Thursday in Vienna, Austria, on the deal after a five-month hiatus. The Iranian delegation, led by Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Ali Baqeri Kani, reiterated that they are ready to advance the process if the other side is ready as well.

The official stated that Iran presented its format and proposals to all the parties to the process to speed up the negotiation process, and compensate for the situation that arose with the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the agreement in 2018.
