“Between March 24 and 25, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces violated the provisions of the November 9 trilateral agreement of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, by entering the zone of responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh and by creating an observation post,” said the military entity.

In addition, the department headed by Sergei Shoigú added, Azeri troops carried out “four attacks with Bayraktar TB2 drones against armed units from Nagorno-Karabakh near Farukh” or Paruj, in the Askeran region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Baku had denied the raid.

The Russian Defense Ministry noted that currently “the command of the Russian peacekeepers is taking measures to resolve the situation and return the troops to their original position.”

“An appeal has been sent to the Azerbaijani side to withdraw its forces,” he stressed.

Armenia had urged Russia on Saturday to take visible steps to stabilize the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and to investigate the actions of peacekeepers during the Azerbaijani incursion.

The president of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh republic, Arayik Harutyunyán, in turn decreed martial law.

For its part, the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed its great concern about the growing tensions in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“We strongly urge the parties to show restraint and ensure strict adherence to existing tripartite agreements at the highest level,” it noted.

The Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Ministry said on its official Twitter account on Friday that three soldiers from its army were killed and 14 wounded by the Azerbaijani attacks.

This Saturday he added that the Azerbaijani troops “again resorted to aggressive actions with the use of firearms of different calibers and trying to advance in the western direction of the area under the responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping forces.”

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense pointed out that this Saturday “members of the Armenian illegal armed detachment”, referring to the Nagorno-Karabakh army, “taking advantage of the foggy weather conditions and limited visibility, tried to commit provocations against the units of the Army of Azerbaijan”.

Baku further stated that there are no casualties in the Azerbaijani army and that “the operational situation is under control.”

As a consequence of the Autumn 2020 war, Yerevan lost control over more than two-thirds of the territories in and around Karabakh that it had controlled since the 1990s.

According to clause 1 of the document on the ceasefire signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan with the mediation of Russia, the forces of the parties stopped at the positions they occupied at the time of signing the document.
