Alan Moreno recounted his experience as a participant in “Lost in the tribe”

In a Twitter thread, Alan reported that they arrived at the Ezeiza airport with their bags in hand and ready to board a plane, but with no idea of their destination. “I had to choose between 3 envelopes that randomly contained 3 countries. ‘Ethiopia‘” he wrote, recalling that traveled for more than 30 hours until they reached where the Hamer tribe was. “To give you an idea, its location does not exist on any map,” he pointed out.

There they were received by Bali, the chief of the tribe, and by the members, singing and jumping madly. “It was instantly dark. The production said goodbye and she went to the settlement they had prepared several kilometers away. The first night came… ”, she commented.

The first night as a participant of “Lost in the tribe”

Recalling his first night in Ethiopia as part of the Hamer tribe, Alan said: “Fear is little. Imagine being out in the open in unknown terrain (on the other side of the world) and with several little animals going around”.

However, they had to behave like one more. Like the men of the tribe, they slept outside the huts and cared for the women inside. “We lay down on the ground (along with my old man and brother). We couldn’t stop hugging each other all night. The cold was unbearable, penetrating. We didn’t have any blankets, not to mention a mattress or a pillow,” he recalled. Despite the tiredness they couldn’t sleep all night.

As the days went by, the situation became more “heavy”: “We ate very little and we had just enough water. (…) After a week I started dreaming about food”.

Until eight days later the moment of “goat slaughter ritual”: the men had to kill it, butcher it and cook it; and also drink the blood of the animal as part of the rite. “Due to the voracity with which we ate, two of my brothers broke down. Lucas convulsing, Nicole passed out with her face bruised from the fall,” he noted.

Although they thought about the possibility of turning around, they decided to continue in the reality show. “Resigning meant having to return all the travel, hotel and other expenses that the production had had, in addition to losing the possibility of winning the prize: $300,000 pesos to be distributed among the winners,” he explained.

Alan Moreno recalled the relationship with the members of the tribe

Then he noticed his sister’s affair with Shada, one of the local youths, and assured: “Nothing was armed. Nothing that was seen on TV was scheduled. Neither the relationship, nor the anger nor the crying”.

The difficulties of belonging to the tribe

As part of the Hamers, the Morenos had to do the same as their members, but the challenges and activities became more complex as the days went by. “First, I was punished for losing three goats and forced to collect honey from a hive in a towering tree. Protection? Luck… They used the smoke to ‘scare’ the bees. I had to scramble up it and get the hive down,” she wrote.

Nevertheless, the most difficult ritual was the “Jumping the bull”. “It is the event of the year. Adolescent men must jump naked on the backs of 30 crowded bulls, passing from one side to the other several times. With this they get the passage to adulthood. We were 17 years old, we had to do it,” he pointed out.

Before that, the female relatives of the teenager were flogged by the men. “It was one of the most dangerous moments of the whole experience. They grabbed my two sisters by the arm, they understood that if they were there it was to be whipped. They were saved by the chief of the tribe, Bali, who warned us that we were his ‘protected’”, he commented.

Of course, jumping on the backs of 30 crowded bulls was dangerous. They wanted to do it, but their parents were afraid and wouldn’t let them. The chief of the tribe got angry.

The end of his time in the reality show “Lost in the tribe”

At one point in his story, Alan noted that what began as an ordeal became something else. “We wanted to go back home, with friends and family, but We didn’t want to leave them.”

After 30 days of coexistence, the tribal council crowned them winners of the reality show.

It was time to say goodbye:They gave us a bronze bracelet typical of them (to this day we wear it). We hug each other now. We were a family”.
