The latest appearances of Pope Francis drew attention when he was seen in Wheelchair. It was after that that rumors began could resign from his position due to health problems that have affected him for some time. Given this, Guillermo Marcó, the former spokesman for then Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, denied these statements and assured that “the Pope is perfectly fine and no way is he thinking of quitting.”

Marcó said that he had “a long conversation” with Francisco, an occasion in which he was able to verify that he is “in very good spirits, super attentive and leading the Church with energy and courage”, for which he concluded that the insistent versions about his possible resignation due to their knee problem, which is in the process of overcoming, “they lack all support”.

In relation to the suspension of a trip to two African countries planned for the beginning of July, Marcó maintained that it was due “to compliance with the recommendations of the doctors so as not to affect the frank recovery process of his knee.”

In addition, the priest recounted that “The Pope continues with his activity to the extent that the requirement does not affect the kinesiological therapy that is being followed” and added that “there is a lot that he continues to do, beyond the suspension of long trips that are always very demanding.

The origin of the resignation rumors

On May 23, at a meeting with almost three hundred Italian bishops to elect the new president of the episcopal assembly of Italy, the Pope spoke to them about the wandering problems he suffers from and told them that he does not want to have surgery.

Almost a year ago, on July 4, 2021, was operated on for three hours by a diverticulosis that forced to remove thirty-three centimeters of the large intestine. Francis told the bishops that after the intervention he had suffered “nuisances” caused by anesthesia.

He did not clarify if these “annoyances” were serious and how long they lasted, but he said a phrase that was echoed in those who heard it: “Before I have surgery, I quit!”.

A Vatican source tried to downplay the remarks, saying the phrase was spoken in a joking tone. It was after this that rumors began to circulate.
