The German government is in trouble, with an emergency scenario preparing for a sudden shutdown of Russian gas

The preparations of the Ministry of Economy show that they are in increased readiness in the largest economy in Europe.

It is planned that the German government would support the provision of additional loans and guarantees to energy companies to help them cope with rising prices. But critical companies such as refineries would also be taken directly under the wing.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said the country had made “intensive efforts” in recent weeks to reduce Russia’s energy consumption.

Last month, Berlin also approved an amendment to the law that would ultimately allow it to take control of energy companies.

The German government has previously stated that it wants to secede from Russian energy, but is still dependent on Moscow until mid-2024.

It is not yet clear when Berlin will be able to secede from Moscow. Reuters recalls that Germany has previously supported coal and oil sanctions against Moscow, so it may not be able to support gas restrictions immediately.
