Panagiotisz Kontoleon resigned after illegal actions were discovered during a legal surveillance, the office said, but did not go into details. Under Greek law, any surveillance requires prosecutorial approval.
According to MTI’s report, Dimitriadisz’s resignation was not justified by the office. Nikosz Androulakis, the leader of the opposition socialist PASZOK party, complained to the court that they tried to tap his mobile phone with the Predator spy software.
Andrulakisz, who is also a member of the European Parliament, said that he learned about the wiretapping attempt from the cyber security service of the European Parliament a few days before he filed a report on July 26.
In April, financial journalist Tanassis Kukakisz received a notification from Citizen Lab, a digital rights protection organization, that he had been monitored with the Predator spy program between July and September 2021.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an American-based journalist rights organization, demanded an investigation to determine who was behind the surveillance, and called for those involved to be held accountable.
