The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation will evaluate the decision of the Latvian authorities to demolish the monument to Soviet soldiers in Riga

The Investigative Committee of Russia will evaluate the decisions of the Latvian authorities on the demolition of the monument to Soviet soldiers in Riga. Their actions can be qualified under a criminal article, according to the telegram channel of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.

According to the report, the Saeima of Latvia adopted a law on the suspension of Article 13 of the bilateral agreement with Russia on memorial structures and monuments, which now makes it possible to demolish, among other things, the monument to the soldiers of the Soviet Army – the liberators of Latvia and Riga from the Nazi invaders, installed on southwest of Riga in Victory Park in 1985.

On behalf of the chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia, investigators will analyze the legality of such a decision being made unilaterally. And the actual demolition of the monument can be qualified under Article 354.1 of the Criminal Code, which provides for liability for the rehabilitation of Nazism by publicly desecrating the symbols of Russia’s military glory.
