MADRID, Spain.- Among the most important events that occurred on May 12 in Cuba are the presentation in Havana of the Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, in 1920, and the visit of former United States President Jimmy Carter, in 2002.

1920: The Italian tenor Enrico Caruso visits Havana and makes his debut at the National Theater with the opera “Martha”, by the German composer Friedrich von Flotow. The queues to buy tickets to their performances stretched around the theater. He was one of the most popular singers of the 1920s and one of the pioneers of recorded music.

1967: Former baseball player Germán Mesa is born in Havana. He was a national champion twice with the Industriales team from the capital and a gold and silver medalist in the Olympic Games. He is considered the best shortstop defender of all time in the National Series.

1998: The historian and economist Julio Le Riverend dies in Havana. Between 1981 and 1995 he was director of the José Martí National Library. He devoted himself to studying the influence of sugar cane on Cuban society.

2002: Former United States President Jimmy Carter visited Cuba, in what represented the first visit to the Island by a US president since 1959. Carter fulfilled a five-day agenda that included visits to the Latin American Stadium, the Aula Magna of the University of Havana , to a medical school, to the sanatorium in Havana and a private palate.

2008: The cartoonist and cartoonist Virgilio Martínez Gainza dies at the age of 77. He is considered the father of the Cuban cartoon. He was the founder of the graphic humor publication Dedeté. In 2003 he received the “José Martí” National Journalism Prize, awarded by the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC).

2008: Orestes González Quintana dies, journalist and designer of various media, including the magazine Bohemia and the newspaper The Habanero. In 1992 he received the Juan Gualberto Gómez award from UPEC.
