A pilot plant of 600 square meters that will carry out research, development and training of storage, conditioning and processing of grains, seeds and derived products, was inaugurated in Balcarce.

The project is run by a articulation carried out between INTA, the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the National University of Mar del Plata (UNMdP) and the Conicet. As detailed from the autarchic body, the development is “unique” in Latin America and will offer evaluation services for specific products and processes according to the needs of the industry.

“The possibility of scaling the laboratory tests to an instance that enables the connection with the industrial phase is a milestone for INTA”, indicated the director of the Buenos Aires South Regional Center of INTA, Horace Berger.

In this sense, he explained that the plant is a tool that will enable an “interdisciplinary articulation with a systemic approach”, with the aim of working on the integral valorization of food. “based on the quality of the primary product”.

And he added: “It is a way to improve the food preservation, reducing loss and waste, which is one of the main challenges on a global scale and one of the objectives for sustainable development”.

The use of research, key to making production more efficient

During the opening act, Nicholas Carlino, representative of Coninagro in the Board of Directors of the national research organization, highlighted the importance of the post-harvest of grains in the work of the Argentine producer.

“Without a doubt, both for the productive sector and for cooperatives, this plant is very relevant. We are working with technologies that are going to help us improve the quality of the seeds and, above all, their conservation”, he remarked.

The building has capacity for innovate in technologies related to hermetic storage, controlled and modified atmospheres, quality monitoring and management systems, drying systems –efficiency and quality–, pest control, segregation and traceability.

In addition, you can make a evaluation of quality, health and safety parameters in grains, seeds and derived products under different storage conditions, automation in post-harvest processes and primary grain transformation processes, among others.

Finally, the director of INTA Balcarce, Facundo Quiroz, defined it as “a platform of science and technology that will act as a bridge between research and the demands of the territory”.

“This approach brings us closer to the industry, giving added value to research and development products,” concluded the agency’s specialist.
