A team of architects and specialists discussed yesterday the different problems that gravitate around the Colonial city and at the same time they made their proposals to convert that territory, in addition to being a tourist pillar of the capital, into a sustainable area for its inhabitants.

during the forum “The Colonial City of Santo Domingo: planning and governance”, organized by the National University Pedro Henríquez Ureña (Unphu), a recount was made of all the plans that the different governments have executed, including the loan of 90 million dollars from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to recover public spaces, streets, monuments, as well as improve the living conditions of the inhabitants.

Among the ideas raised was that of the economic consultant Juan Lladowho proposed the independence of the Colonial city to be called “Special Municipality of the Historic Center of Santo Domingo”.

The objective of the project would be to apply better management to overcome the problems that affect the inhabitants, according to Lladó. He also added that in this way more importance would be given to the historical value that this demarcation represents.

The new independent region would be administered by a representative from the Ministry of the Presidency, one from the Dominican Academy of History, one from Icomos (International Council of Monuments and Sites), one from the Union of Neighborhood Councils, one from the Catholic Church and two or three representatives of the political parties.

While the mayor of the “Special Municipality of the Historic Center” would be a professional from the area chosen through a tender with a renewable five-year contract.

For the specialist, beyond the tourist value, emphasis should be placed on Dominicans being the ones who can learn about their roots with visits to that territory. Tourism should be taken advantage of, but it should not be the priority, as he explained.

Evils come from before

The dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Art of the study house, the architect Omar Rancier, explained that, in urban and historical terms, the Colonial City is the most important asset of the capital. He added that despite the fact that a rescue began in 1970, none of the plans that have been formulated have been correctly implemented.
