The engineer attended a mass at the Basilica Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Chiquinquirá, in Boyacá. He arrived accompanied by his wife, Socorro Oliveros, and his mother, Cecilia Suárez. The reason for the engineer’s visit was to apologize for the allusion he made a few weeks ago to the Virgin Mary in an inappropriate context.
The former mayor of Bucaramanga delivered a floral offering dedicated to the Virgin, knelt to apologize for statements that hurt the country’s religious community and asked for the blessing of his mother’s hand, ad portas of the second presidential round.

A group of young people arrived at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, where the presidential candidate, demanding that the Virgin Mary be respected.
As the engineer left, his followers violently attacked them. At that time, clashes and verbal insults were recorded. In fact, they tore up the posters of the young people who were protesting.
“With several women we were in front of the Basilica very respectfully putting up posters to ask for respect for the Virgin Mary because the engineer had treated her badly. We didn’t even speak, when the mass was over, the people who accompanied him came out and tore up our posters,” said one of the young women who was protesting.
