German carmaker Volkswagen published disappointing quarterly results on Friday. The carmaker from Wolfsburg continues to struggle with the supply of microchips.

In May, VW sold 658,000 cars worldwide. Compared to the same month a year earlier, this is 23.5 percent less. In the first five months of 2022, VW sold 3.1 million cars, a quarter less than last year.

A lack of microchips leads to supply problems. Moreover, the important Chinese market is only now starting to recover after the lockdowns against the corona pandemic. VW manager Herbert Diess does say he expects both supply problems and sales in China to improve over the course of the year.

In Western Europe, VW sold 22.9 percent fewer cars on an annual basis, in China 23.8 percent. Main brand VW sold 23.3 percent fewer cars. Skoda was the worst with 39.3 percent less. Audi sold 21.3 percent less. Even luxury brand Porsche fell 10.4 percent.
