The Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz decided that the starting formation of his team should have a 4-3-3 module with these names: Hosseini; Rezaeian, Pouraliganji, Hosseini and Mohammadi; Ezatolahi, Nourollahi and Hajsafi; Gholizadeh, Azmoun and Taremi.

Alireza Beiranvand gave the first scare of the World Cup in the match against England. Due to the concussion, Beiranvand was declared unfit to play. In his place, the Portuguese Carlos Queiroz decided that his replacement should be Hossein Hosseini.

The Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz had spoken about the tough defeat of his team, Iran, against England 6-2 and stated: “My players are not in the best environment, in terms of concentration, due to the problems that surround them. They are human beings, they have children, they have a dream, which is to play for their country, for their people, to enjoy it. I’m very proud that they stood up and fought for it, that they scored twice against England in these circumstances.” Queiroz referred to the protests before the game and warned that “the boys only want to express themselves as players, but whatever they do, whatever they say, they want to kill them. They tell them to represent the country and play for the people. Everyone represents the people here.”
