Bolsonaro dynamited the rule that prohibited the accumulation of salaries beyond the constitutional ceiling. With a stroke of the pen, he guaranteed more than 300 thousand reais a year for each of the military ministers who flattered him, such as Generals Luiz Eduardo and Augusto Heleno. General Braga Netto, who is not even a minister anymore, also did well.
With another stroke of the pen, Bolsonaro put Admiral Bento Albuquerque, formerly minister of Mines and Energy, into the street. Bento has four stars and only went into reserve in 2020 — he attended Bolsonaro coup demonstrations when he was still active (and was part of the Navy High Command).
Bento was never disloyal to the president and was fired for no reason, in an unexpected, summary and humiliating manner.
Why were you fired?
A little to make him a scapegoat for fuel price increases, taking responsibility away from the Planalto Palace.
A little to punish him for not being as much of a doormat as Bolsonaro demands. Bento dared to disagree with the president in relation to fuel prices. And Bolsonaro accepts nothing but absolute subservience.
And a little to get revenge on the Armed Forces, who kicked him out of the corporation three decades ago. Bolsonaro never misses a chance to humiliate an officer higher than himself, preferably general officers.
That Bolsonaro is happy to treat generals like a rag, everyone knows. What is a mystery is why the generals accept it.
