WNBA figureheads star on cover of Sport Illustrated: “This is who we are”

Unrivaled, history-making and radical. It is the models and players of the WNBA who adorn the cover of the latest issue of Sport Illustrated. They are also a diverse group of athletes. “This is who we are, this is the makeup of our league,” said WNBA legend Sue Bird. “We represent different groups: women, women of color, members of the LGBTQIA2+ community and many more. † † †

“The issue of bathing suits has been iconic for so many years. Now you see an evolution in what that can mean and what that can look like, and I think the WNBA players who are part of that make it special. There’s no better group of women to show that evolution,” said Sue Bird.

Following recent celebrations of its 25th anniversary and two years of high-profile advocacy for racial justice, human rights, mental health and more, the WNBA continues to be at the forefront of societal change. It continues to evolve and stands for respect, equal pay, recognition for sacrifices made and the right to be complex, multifaceted and have ambitions.

Didi Richards (New York Liberty), Nneka Ogwumike (Los Angeles Sparks), Breanna Stewart (Seatlle Storm), Te’a Cooper (Los Angeles Sparks) and Sue Bird (Seattle Storm) formed the base five of this spectacular and photo shoot.
