Some sitcoms are lucky enough to be repeated day in and day out in the afternoon programs of major commercial channels. Friends, How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory also garnered many fans in Germany. In comparison, the US comedy Das Büro aka The Office led a shadowy existence on Super RTL and the like. That could change because the legendary Meme Factory is now a new addition to the Netflix catalog.
The Office new to Netflix: This is not Stromberg 2.0
As the title suggests, the comedy series is based on the British The Office by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, just like the German version Stromberg. The US series aired in 2005, starring Steve Carell (Vice) as Michael Scott, a department manager at a glamorously titled paper company: Dunder Mifflin.
Similar to Stromberg and The Office, the first season of the series focused primarily on foreign-shame humor and political incorrectness in the workplace, but even then it lagged behind the British and German versions in terms of harshness.
then came the change of direction. Beginning in Season 2, The Office US slowly found its own, more upbeat voice. From now on, the remake evolved to one of the best comedy series in recent years, which explored everyday office life for years for wonderful punchlines, equipped with a hearty portion of satire, an eye for the absurdities of everyday life and a sense of romance that the German and British versions lack.
All of this is captured with the well-known quasi-documentary style (without canned laughs), which also makes use of the mimic talent of the cast. Overall, The Office works more on the comedic surface than the original, but that’s how it is more easily accessible.
The reason for the success was therefore also the growing ensemble with the original stars John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer as Will-they-Won’t-They-Couples Jim and Pam, Rainn Wilson as the eccentric Dwight Schrute (the Ernie from The Office, so to speak) and, of course, Steve Carell’s awkward boss. Numerous other comedy talents have joined the cast over the years, such as Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project), Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Zach Woods (Silicon Valley) and Ed Helms (The Hangover).
Streaming guide: where to start with The Office and which seasons are worth watching?
For the patient: There are 9 seasons of The Office in total. Of course, the best thing to do is to start from the beginning. The first season has only 6 half-hour episodes and after the rather weak pilot, who sticks closely to the original, the quality increases.
For the impatient: Similar to The Office’s follow-up Parks and Recreation, you can skip Season 1 for now and watch Season 2, for example at episode S02E03, Office Olympics. It’s closer to the future tone of the series. That doesn’t mean there aren’t any comedy highlights in Season 1 though!
When best seasons of The Office Seasons 2 to 5 apply, they form the funny highlight of the comedy series. In the later seasons, especially from season 8, the quality then fluctuated, also because the series lost one of its main actors with Steve Carell.
If you Serien wie Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place, Parks and Recreation or Space Force, then you should definitely check out The Office.
