Alexander Ovechkin, a Russian NHL striker for the Washington Capitals, said he was delighted to be among the top five snipers in league history.
“I’m just enjoying my time. Of course, it’s a great honor to be on this list, but as I always say, game after game, day after day. ” quotes Ovechkin NHL website.
Ovechkin also said that it was a pleasure for the team to play in front of full stands. “The atmosphere was great, we missed it. It’s very nice to see a full house in our palace, it’s an incredible feeling. Indeed, we all had great pleasure. ” added Russian.

Washington head coach Peter Laviolette said that it was important for Ovechkin to break the record, given that it was not known until recently whether the Russian forward would play in the first match of the season. “Not a good week to get ready for the premiere and help the team be successful. On Thursday night, 36-year-old Ovechkin scored a brace in the first match of the season – against the New York Rangers (5-1). He finished fifth on the list of the best snipers in NHL history, beating Marcel Dionne. The Russian forward has 732 goals, the Canadian has 731. Wayne Gretzky (894) is in first place, followed by Gordy Howe (801), Jaromir Jagr (766) and Brett Hull (741).
