Russian forward of the Washington Capitals NHL club Alexander Ovechkin took to the ice in the first match of the new season against the New York Rangers. The captain of the capital scored two goals and two assists.
Thanks to a double against his compatriot Alexander Georgiev, Ovechkin finished fifth in the list of the best snipers in NHL history. Now he has 732 goals in the National Hockey League. He beat Canadian Marcel Dionne (731 goals), who played for the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers in the 1970s and 1980s.
The meeting between “Washington” and “New York” ended in a victory for the hosts with a score of 5: 1. In addition to Ovechkin (distinguished himself in the 43rd and 53rd minutes), TJ Oshi (5th minute), Justin Schultz (33rd) and Hendrix Lapierre (34th) scored goals for the Capitals. For the Rangers, the only goal was scored by Chris Crider (50th).
As part of Washington, defender Dmitry Orlov and forward Yevgeny Kuznetsov also took to the ice. The latter gave three assists. Capitals goalkeeper Ilya Samsonov remained on the bench. Forward Artemy Panarin, as well as goalkeepers Igor Shesterkin and Alexander Georgiev, play for the Rangers. The forward did not score with effective actions, and Georgiev defended the goal of the guests, reflecting 22 of 27 shots.

Ovechkin was injured in a preseason game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night. In the first period, the Russian tried to use a forceful technique against striker Travis Konecny, after which he fell on the ice. After the collision, Ovechkin slowly climbed off the ice, and then headed to the bench and into the locker room.
