The Stuttgart BMX racer Philip Schaub competes in the world championship in the pump track in Lisbon. During training, he talked about what the sport is all about and why races are decided in the mind.

Stuttgart – Next to the race track, known in technical jargon as the racetrack, Philip Schaub and his colleagues from the federal squad stand next to their cars, change their clothes and prepare for training. Schaub gives a colleague a cable tie and then sets about attaching his own transponder to his BMX bike. “We need it to measure the time on the track,” he explains. At the European Cup in Papendal, the Netherlands, he had to take it off a few weeks ago.
