“This is modern slavery. This is what we are going through, I can’t lie about the way we are treated in some homes.” Our Observer Brenda Dama, a domestic worker, does not compromise on the reality of her job as a domestic worker in Saudi Arabia. But with her videos on TikTok, this Kenyan recounts it with detachment and humor, shedding another light on the daily life of domestic workers, whom she also hopes to comfort with her publications.
On TikTok, there are videos of several foreign domestic workers employed in Saudi Arabia recounting their daily lives. And it was by seeing them share their difficulties that Brenda Dama decided to launch his own account : “I thought to myself: ‘if other domestic workers publish videos about the suffering they are going through in Saudi Arabia, why not come up with videos that could motivate them, make them feel like they are not alone to go through such situations, “” she explains on our show.
The young woman uses the codes of TikTok – short videos and dynamic editing – to tell and denounce the endless days, the insults and the kafala system, according to which a domestic worker must give all his identity documents to his employer, which concretely prevents him from running away. “I’ve seen people go crazy. It’s obviously because of what they’re going through here. Even being mentally strong, someone who comes here can go crazy after a while,” says our Observer.
The remarks she makes could have gotten her into serious trouble with her employers, but this is not the case, assures Brenda Dama, who also hopes to sensitize the Saudis on the condition of domestic workers. “I also post videos for our employers to see, because they are also on TikTok …”
