A victory of hope for Senegal, "farewell" to Qatar

Senegal celebrated their first victory at the 2022 World Cup, beating Qatar 3-1 at the “Al Thumama Stadium” in Doha, for the 2nd matchday of the 1st group. With goals from Dia in the 41′, Diediu in the 48′ and Cheykh Dieng in the 84′, the African champions secured the “three points” and will now play the qualification “final” against Ecuador, on 29/11. Mudari scored in the 78th minute for the hosts, who suffered their second defeat and were essentially eliminated (since they have a match against the Netherlands remaining), “imitating” South Africa in 2010, which until this year was the only host country that did not was able to go through the group stage.

Aliou Cisse made two changes in relation to the defeat of the premiership against the Netherlands (2-0), with one of them having as a “victim” Pape Abou Cisse of Olympiakos, who gave up his place to left back Jacobs , with Diallo moving to the center of defense. The other difference had to do with Kouyaté, who had left injured from the previous game, whose place was taken by Diediu. On the other hand, Qatar made three changes to their starting line-up, with Felix Sanchez even choosing a different goalkeeper (Barsam instead of Al Seeb).

Senegal, a clearly better quality team -even without their big star, Sadio Mane-, took control of the match from the start and shut down the hosts in half the field. Shar entered the area in the 4th minute, but missed the final attempt, while Diendiou’s header in the 16th minute and Idrissa Gei’s strong shot in the 24th minute had the same result. Finally, the Africans found the goal they were looking for in the 41st minute, with Dia taking advantage of Kuki’s “chaff” and opening the scoring with a shot from inside the area.

The African champions doubled their lead in the 48th minute, when, after a Jacobs corner at the front post, Diediu headed home to make it 0-2. Qatar tried to react and went ahead, but Hassan’s long-range shot in the 61st minute went just wide, while Mendy saved Ali’s fine cross for a corner in the 63rd minute and made a huge intervention in the 67th minute with a close-range effort by Mohamed ( went for the header but found the ball with his knee).

The persistence of the hosts was justified in the 78th minute, with the newly arrived Mudari scoring with a nailed header, after a cross from Mohamed from the right, and achieving his team’s first goal of the tournament. The reduction in the score spread excitement, but it ended in the 84th minute, with Cheykh Dieng (who had also been substituted) taking advantage of Iliman Ediage’s assist and “sealing” Senegal’s victory.
