Canada the impressions, Belgium the victory (1-0)

With a goal by Michy Batshuayi at the end of the half (44′), Belgium beat Canada 1-0 in Al Rayyan, in the first match between the two teams for the World Cup in Qatar. Better in the first half of the game, Canada missed a penalty with Alphonso Davies (11′), who was “beaten” by Thibaut Courtois.

One could say that the first half was not given football justice. On the other hand, however, efficiency and absolute concentration are inseparable and perhaps the most defining parts of the game.

So since Canada failed to capitalize on their superiority – universal at certain intervals – and at the same time were surprised at one stage, then Belgium rightly went into the dressing room with a lead.

In the 44th minute, Alderweireld was “filled” by the defense, Batshuayi quickly left the area and shot hard for 1-0, catching… sleeping Canadian center backs.

Until then, however, the American team was dominant. In the 11th minute, Carrasco won a penalty from Buchanan’s shot. Alphonso Davies took the execution but it was poor and Courtois made the save.

Even after the Belgians’ goal, an equalizer came close with Buchanan desperately missing from the height of the box. The man, along with Davies, Jonathan David and Eustaquio, caused huge problems for the Belgian defense and Martinez would have to change a lot on the break or a goal was a matter of time for the CONCACAF champions.

Thus, the Spanish coach made two changes in the half (Meunier, Onana) to gain more energy for his team that “suffered” from the constant pressing of their opponents.

The Canadians couldn’t keep up and Belgium began to regain control of the game. Something that was helped by the entry of the young Trossard after completing an hour of the match.

A header by Larin that was neutralized by Courtois in the 79th minute was the best moment for the Canadians who were left with… memories of their excellent performance in the first half. Belgium’s experience in managing difficult situations proved to be a catalyst and so the “red devils” made a comeback with a victory in Qatar.
