Canada to ban gun imports

Canada announced Friday it will ban gun imports starting Aug. 19 as part of a broader proposed freeze in the wake of mass shootings in the United States.

Such weapons “have one purpose and one purpose only and that is to kill people,” Public Safety Minister Marco Mencino said at a news conference announcing the decision.

Global Affairs Canada added in a statement that the ban on businesses and individuals is a temporary measure, which “will last until the nationwide freeze comes into effect.”
