Smart watches and fitness bracelets are interesting technological accessories, but the accuracy of the measured values ​​compared to professional meters is not often mentioned. Even manufacturers of wearable electronics inform their users countless times that the measured data are only informative. And that ends the guesswork about the accuracy of the measurement.

A team of scientists from Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Louisiana State University and Hawaii Cancer Center tested the accuracy of the BIA (Biolelectric Imedance Analysis) function on the last two generations of Samsung watches. It determines what percentage of your body is skeletal muscle and body fat.

This resulted in a study in which 109 people participated, 75 of whom filled out complete protocols. The measured values ​​were compared with professional DXA scans and with laboratory octapolar bioelectrical impedance analyses. Leaving aside the secondary effect of the measurement, which made the wearable watch move more and sit less, the watch’s accuracy alone is worth noting. The Galaxy Watch4 had readings that were 97-98% the same as professional meters.
