Russia: US detainees to take responsibility for their crimes

The Kremlin announced today that the Americans who were taken prisoner in Ukraine are “mercenaries” who participated in illegal activities and should be held accountable for their “crimes”, the Russian news agency RIA reported.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov also said the detainees were not covered by the Geneva Convention because they did not belong to regular troops. They fired on Russian soldiers and put their lives in danger.

At the same time, Peshkov said that the American basketball player Britney Greener, who is being held in Russia, is facing criminal prosecution, RIA reported, citing a statement made today by the Kremlin representative.

“Why should we call her a hostage? She violated Russian law. She is now facing criminal prosecution. She is not a hostage,” Peshkov told MSNBC, according to RIA.
