Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected in Tehran today to meet with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the official IRNA news agency reported.
“Lavrov is expected to meet with our foreign minister tomorrow (Thursday),” the agency added, without elaborating.
The visit comes after Iran and Russia, two countries with international sanctions imposed by the West, said in May they wanted to boost trade and energy ties following a visit by the Russian deputy prime minister. in Tehran.
It comes at a time when talks on Iran’s nuclear program, which began in Vienna in April 2021 between Tehran and the major powers (Russia, the United States, China, France, Britain and Germany), have stalled since March. .
The talks, in which the United States is indirectly involved, are aimed at reviving the 2015 agreement after Washington’s withdrawal.
Although once rivals, Iran and Russia have improved their relations in recent years, moving to a political and military approach to serve their common geopolitical interests. Now the two countries are cooperating on many issues.
Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi traveled to Moscow in January, where he met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and presented him with a plan to strengthen bilateral relations over the next 20 years.
