AKEL will remain creative for the benefit of the people and the homeland, says S. Stefanou.
AKEL reaffirmed its readiness to remain creative and constructive in the face of the great stakes of the place, “always for the benefit of the people and the homeland”, at today’s meeting of the National Council, says in a written statement the General Secretary of the party, Stefanos Stefanou.
Mr. Stefanou states in his statement that, regarding the Cyprus issue, “after receiving information from the President on the situation, we reiterated the need to stay focused on the goal of the liberation and reunification of Cyprus, the solution of the Cyprus issue on the agreed basis and frame”.
AKEL, it is added, “had and still has the position that we need to take initiatives towards the resumption of talks from the point that was interrupted in 2017 and on the basis of the Guterres Framework and the negotiating acquis.”
“At a time when the eyes of the world are on the war in Ukraine, we need to consistently and credibly advance the need to mobilize the international community for a solution to the Cyprus problem,” it said.
Regarding the Recovery Plan and the ongoing reforms, Mr. Stefanou states that they indicated that all the previous years AKEL “has been creative, even protagonist, in promoting reforms that really serve the Cypriot society”.
“AKEL is opposed to any reform proposal based on its content and not the declarative titles”, he adds.
Mr. Stefanou also states that AKEL insisted on the issue of accuracy and the need for drastic measures to support the purchasing power of households, employees, the local middle class. “We have re-introduced our proposals for imposing a fuel ceiling and for taxing the unexpected profits of large companies in the energy sector,” he notes.
He concludes that they expect the government to listen to their proposals, which, as he states, only aim to alleviate the vast majority of the Cypriot people.
