Instagram will start testing that the photos are the same size as the Reels. The platform wants these to occupy the entire screen to standardize the publications based on it. This change is one of the most drastic, since the social network is characterized by using the 4:5 ratio for images.
“You can have tall videos, but you can’t have tall photos on Instagram. So we thought maybe we should make sure we treat both equally.”, indicates Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram during the ‘Ask me anything’ of the week, according to TheVerge.
Likewise, the executive points out that the start of these tests will be sooner than could be imagined. “Mosseri confirmed that Instagram will start testing ultra-tall 9:16 photos ‘in a week or two’”, affirms the medium.

This change seeks that all the content occupies the screen, as Reels do. “Instagram currently maxes out at 4:5 when displaying vertical images that have been cropped accordingly. But the introduction of support for slimmer and taller 9:16 photos will help them fill the screen as you scroll through the app feed.”, adds the North American portal.
The previous changes caused the aesthetics of the photos to be affected, since they were not of the same ratio as the full screen. “some photographers criticized Instagram’s TikTok-like redesign for the way it forced all photos to display awkwardly in a 9:16 frame. The new feed also added gradient overlays to the bottom of posts to make the text easier to read. But that clashed with the original appearance of the photographers’ work.”, states the website.
Instagram had tested that all videos are Reels, but after criticism from users, for being too similar to TikTok, they took a step back. However, this type of advertisement seems to indicate that the social network will inevitably become a copy of the video app.
