Tatar in EU: The Turkish Cypriot people are called to become a minority

The leader of the Turkish Cypriot community issued a written statement on the occasion of “Europe Day”. In his statement, Ersin Tatar criticized the EU, urging it to focus on the “two-state solution”.

“We regret that the European Union has departed from its basic principles, continues to act against these principles and continues its bias against Cyprus,” said Tatar, who stated that “the European Union’s position “, which does not take into account the rights of the Turkish Cypriot people, is a matter of concern and an obstacle to efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.”

“While the promises of the EU (to the Turkish Cypriots) are not fulfilled, the Turkish Cypriot people are called to become a minority of Greek Cypriots, and at the same time there are still sanctions and an embargo (for the Turkish Cypriots) that violate human rights” , he adds.

In its “Europe Day” message, the “presidency” promotes the bi-zonal, bi-communal federation as a model solution aimed at destroying the state and sovereign rights of the Turkish Cypriot people, making our people a minority, and includes the termination of the status of the guarantor force of Turkey and the withdrawal of the Turkish troops from Cyprus “. He also claims that “as the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war shows, it is impossible for us to relinquish our sovereign rights, our state, the guarantees of the Motherland of Turkey and the Turkish army.”

Based on the above, Mr. Tatar’s leadership also states that “our goal is to reach a fair, lasting and lasting agreement in Cyprus.” “It can not be achieved through a federal solution, but through our proposal for a solution based on the existence of two sovereign equal states, which we put on the table for the first time in Geneva,” he said. “We seek to establish cooperation based on the principle of mutual interdependence and the principle of ‘win-win’, especially in matters closely related to the realities of the island, such as the energy and daily life of the two peoples,” he added.

Promoting the two-state solution, the Turkish Cypriot leadership calls on the EU to reconsider its line on the Cyprus issue, to respect the “principle of the right to sovereignty”, to accept the Turkish Cypriots as “a separate people in Cyprus” and to “fulfill the promises made to the Turkish Cypriot people during the referendum on the Annan plan”.
