The ban on flavored heated tobacco products comes into effect

The Commission welcomes today’s entry into force of the ban on flavored heated tobacco products.

According to the Commission, the ban will help achieve the goal set in the European Plan to Fight Cancer to create a “Tobacco-free Generation”, in which less than 5% of the population will use tobacco by 2040.

Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou stated that “tobacco causes 90% of lung cancers. It is important that we take a firm stand to reduce tobacco consumption, especially as we see a constant introduction of new products to the market. Thanks to the ban, our citizens, especially young people, will be better protected from the harmful effects of these products. This brings us one step closer to a smoke-free generation.”

Member States now have eight months to transpose the delegated directive into national law. The new rules will come into full force on October 23, 2023, after the end of a three-month transition period to exhaust the current stock of flavored heated tobacco products.
