The US "opposes" actions that "destabilize" the Syrian north

The US opposition to actions that destabilize Syria and violate the sovereignty of Iraq was expressed by the State Department yesterday Monday, the day after the start of the bombings launched by the Turkish army in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A US State Department press release stated that Washington “expresses our sincere condolences for the loss of civilian life in Syria and Turkey” and urges a “de-escalation in Syria to protect civilian life and support the common cause of defeat the Islamic State (IS)”.

“We continue to oppose any uncoordinated military action in Iraq that violates (Iraqi national) sovereignty,” the text added.

Besides, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna expressed her “concern” and called on Turkey to show “restraint”, the day after the series of Turkish airstrikes against Kurdish positions in Syria and Iraq.

“It is not the first time (…) that we see Turkey carrying out attacks against another country”, Mrs. Colonna noted yesterday, Monday, on the sidelines of an international meeting dedicated to support for Moldova.
