Smart can really be anywhere today. For wearables, smartwatches, bracelets or even rings are commonplace. However, the British football club Manchester City, in cooperation with the Cisco company, has created a product that is unprecedented – a smart fan scarf alias Connected Scarf! From next season, the club will start distributing them to its fans, but it is not yet clear whether the scarf will be available for free or for a fee.
At first glance, this is a classic scarf for football fans, but a second look reveals the EmotiBit sensor, which rests directly on the fan’s neck when the scarf is worn correctly. It includes a PPG sensor, an accelerometer, a thermometer and an EDA sensor. And this is rather a typical equipment of fitness trackers than almost ordinary knitted scarves…
You might be wondering what this smart scarf is actually for? Manchester City club management wants to use this scarf to monitor “the physiological response, emotions and enthusiasm of football fans in relation to the image of the game”. The football club wants to use the subsequently obtained data to “deeper understanding of fans and their needs”. The measured data will then be compared with the recording of the game, depending on which the reactions of the audience and their health data will be evaluated. However, it is not yet clear whether this will help in anything concrete. At the very least, this is a rather interesting “gadget” that you simply cannot find anywhere else in the world.
