On January 14, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov gives the first major press conference in 2022. According to the official announcement, it will be devoted to the results of the activities of Russian diplomacy in 2021. Although, with a high degree of confidence, it can be assumed that a significant part of the journalists’ questions will concern the current situation around Ukraine and the talks on the non-expansion of NATO.
Let us remind you that Sergei Lavrov’s press conference is taking place immediately after three rounds of talks between Russian diplomats and colleagues from the United States, NATO and the OSCE. They discussed the requirements of the Russian side for mutual security guarantees. Our country’s proposals consist in written guarantees of NATO’s refusal to include the former Soviet republics in the bloc, the curtailment of American military activity in Europe and the non-deployment of American strike systems in Europe. According to both Western and Russian diplomats, no compromise has yet been found on these issues.
