The 40-year-old died in the late afternoon in a Berlin hospital from his serious injuries, as a spokesman for the Berlin police announced on Wednesday.

Previously it had been said that there was no danger to life. Apparently the condition worsened.

The trans person first doused himself with gasoline without a word on Tuesday at 1:20 p.m. on Alexanderplatz and then set himself on fire. Witnesses had informed the emergency services about the incident.

According to the police, the person on fire was extinguished on Tuesday by an employee of the Galeria Kaufhof branch with a fire extinguisher and taken to a special clinic in an ambulance.

A pastor had looked after the witnesses on site after this shocking experience, the police said on Twitter.

The officials initially did not provide any information about the reasons why the person was set on fire.

According to the current state of knowledge, the police continue to rule out political motivation.

A death investigation has been launched.
